Both the Ritz Paris and Buck's Club in London claim invention around 1922. The drink was named after the motorcycle attachment – supposedly how the American officer who inspired it arrived at the bar.

The original was equal parts (1:1:1), the modern version is spirit-forward (2:1:1). The Ritz Paris uses 2:¾:¾. Try different ratios to find your preference.
